Go Green, Save Water

Fresh Water today is becoming scarce. As more and more water sources turn brackish, it is but natural to save precious water and at the same find ways to reduce water pollution. Water conservation techniques can be applied at any place where water is used, more so in homes, hotels and restaurants. It is in these place water is widely used. Read below to see how we can all help conserve water.

Kitchens

Water usage in the kitchen is inevitably high. Cooking and cleaning consume a lot of water. Be sure to use the required amount of water and choose utensils of the right size and make for cooking purposes.

Water faucets in the kitchen can be fitted with low-flow aerators such as the faucet aerator from Danco. This will ensure the incoming water is mixed with air, reducing water flow and eventually consumption. Do not keep the water running all the time though you may be in a hurry to complete work. Instead fill up a container with water and use from that as needed.

Water that is already used from the kitchen is not that impure. You can redirect this water to your garden to water the plants or even to a water-harvesting pit on the ground instead of letting it run down the drain. Dishwashers also utilize a lot of water. Check for the most efficient model before you purchase a dishwasher.

Bathrooms

After the kitchen, it is now time to look at water consumption in the bathroom and toilet. You can go in for water heaters with a capacity suited to your needs so that you don’t have to heat excess water. It is better still go in for tankless heaters. Bosch AquaStar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater #125HX-NG by Bosch Water Heating is one such heater that heats water as it flows through the heater.

Instead of using bathtubs, using a shower saves water. Low flow showerheads of different brands are very helpful. We recommend the Niagara the Earth Water Saving Showerhead in White and Revitalize Spa Flow Showerhead. These are available to help you save water while enjoying a good shower. Toilet flushes also are now designed to consume less water (Low Flow Flushes) and still keep the toilet clean!

Laundry

Use a front-loading washing machine instead of a top-loading model. These are designed to use lesser water than conventional top-loading models.

Garden

In the garden, you can plant more native variety plants that thrive well in the local region rather than exotic varieties that need more watering. This certainly will keep the surroundings green with less water usage. As we’ve seen earlier, waste water from the kitchen can also be routed to your garden. Of course don’t miss out on using an effective water sprinkler or garden hose.

You can save a lot of water if you keep a close watch on how and where water is wasted. Most household appliances are now designed to be more environmentally friendly. Do check out the Energy Star rating on appliances before buying them, so that they consume less energy and water.
